The Bay Community Church
About Us

About Us

We meet every Sunday at 09h30 in a building that God miraculously provided for us as a church. By 1999 the church owned a house and had purchased a piece of land in Muizenberg. In 2004 we identified a new building and land in the Capricorn Business Park. Negotiations with property developers and estate agents were set in motion and we were able to sell our assets to purchase and renovate our new premises including ample parking space. The wonder is that we are debt free and we praise God for His provision to us.

The Bay is led by elders and leaders passionate to see a church that is God-glorifying, relevant to seekers and sensitive to the Holy Spirit. We long to see the church be all that she is called to be. We want the model of church in the book of Acts to be our reference and not our preference. We believe there is more for the church.

Our leadership team is made up of men and women who have committed their lives to servanthood and participation in the local church. The team of elders is led by Jeff Kidwell. Scroll down to find out more about the elders and their wives.

Jeff & Viv Kidwell were married in 1971 in the small Eastern Cape town of Queenstown. They have been blessed with four children, three of whom are now also married, and have five grand-children, with a sixth due this September.

God called Jeff and Viv to Himself in 1974, they responded to His grace, and committed their lives to Him. He spoke to Jeff almost immediately about serving Him in a full time capacity, but it took thirteen years of preparation, and it was in 1987 that they both felt that the time was right. They then sold up and bought into serving Him and His church.

In 1993 God spoke to Jeff and Viv about planting a church in the Muizenberg area, and again they responded to His Voice and planted The Bay Community Church. The first meeting was on 10 October 1993 and what an adventure it has been and still is!

Richard & Monique Glass were married in 2004. Both have a sense of mission to the local church and the business world. They are intentional and passionate about extending God's Kingdom and long to see the good news of Jesus firmly established in the lives of people from diverse walks of life. They are both entrepreneurs, running their own companies.

They enjoy investing time into leadership development and have a desire to unlock destiny in people. They have a heart for the poor and serve the social development arm of The Bay through The Nceda Trust. Both Richard and Monique find it a privilege and honour to serve in The Bay alongside such a Spirit filled, dynamic and progressive community.

Peter & Jenny Sweatman were married in 1993 and have a son, Paul, and a daughter, Kelly. They joined The Bay family about 11 years ago after doing an Alpha course with Jeff and Viv in their home. Peter runs a garden irrigation business and Jenny worked as a nursing sister until 6 years ago, when she decided to take time out to be a full time mum and wife after recovering from cancer.

Their passion is to see The Bay expand and care for the people to see them grow in the things of God.

Steve and ShelleySteve and Shelley Davies were married in 1982 and have three sons, Jeff, Craig and Michael, all of whom also play active roles at the Bay.  They were part of The Bay from the first meeting.  In 1997 they moved to Cambridge, UK, returning home in 2003 with a real calling to a deeper involvement at The Bay.

Steve is the Technical Director at Connection Telecom, a business he started in 2003 with a  good friend. Shelley is a housewife/mother and is a group leader for 3 WeightWatchers classes.

In his role as elder at the Bay, Steve's particular desire is that we create a context where every person who is part of the Bay can cultivate deep roots in God.  Those deep roots bring assurance, boldness, confidence in God, and joy!  As a couple, Steve and Shelley have a passion for people to have happy, healthy, God-centred marriages that last! They have run 4 or 5 Marriage Courses over the last few years and also do Marriage Preparation with engaged couples.

Tim and Sue Pienaar were founder members at The Bay and have rejoiced in seeing how God has blessed and grown the church since its plant from what is now Jubilee Church in 1993. They have lead home groups in their home for many years, and feel that these groups form the cornerstone of church life. Tim is involved with the building development team, and Sue's heart is for worship, which she often leads, and she is also a talented singer.  They were married in 1986 and have two girls for whom they thank God. Tim has an Engineering business based in Cape Town.

They both consider it a privilege to serve in a church where Jesus is King and the Spirit is given freedom to work. They are excited about what He has in store for The Bay, and all who love Him.

Sheldon and Kathleen Kidwell were married in October 2002 and have one daughter, Ella-Mae. Sheldon joined the staff of The Bay in May 2008 as the Church Administrator after 14 years of service at both Chubb and ADT Security respectively. He heads up the worship band and loves to see people responding to the love of God through worship. Kathleen first joined the church in 1997 and is currently a full time mom after leaving the teaching profession at Bayside Christian High mid-way through 2008.
